Luxor is a city on the east bank of the Nile River in southern Egypt.
It's on the site of ancient Thebes, the pharaohs’ capital at the height of their power,
during the 16th–11th centuries B.C. Today's city surrounds 2 huge, surviving ancient monuments: graceful Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple, a mile north of the property.
The royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens are on the river’s west bank.
Luxor is often called the world’s greatest open-air museum, but that comes nowhere near describing this extraordinary place.
Nothing in the world compares to the scale and grandeur of the monuments that have survived from ancient Thebes.
The setting is breathtakingly beautiful, the Nile flowing between the modern city and west-bank necropolis, backed by the enigmatic Theban escarpment.
Scattered across the landscape is an embarrassment of riches, from the temples of Karnak and Luxor in the east to the many tombs and temples on the west bank.
The original Temple of Luxor is said to have consisted of a large court and a complex of halls and chambers.
In one hall is a granite statue of Alexander the Great.
At the entrance stands two colossal statues of the pharaoh Ramses and a pair of obelisks.
One of the obelisks still stands there today,
the other was removed and re-erected in 1831 in the Place de la Concorde,
Paris where it still stands today. When Thebes fell into decline, Luxor remained the most populated part of the town.

Luxor
- Luxor can get so hot during the day, so it's a good idea to plan some activities for the early hours of the morning or very late in the afternoon. Early risers are definitely rewarded here, as many of the sights open at 6 am. Also traveling from December to April it will also be cooler for you to sightsee.
