Red Sea

Egypt's Red Sea coast is famous for sun-seekers, beach lovers, and water sports enthusiasts. But with so many resorts, how do you decide which is right for you? We will look at their location, climate, beaches, activities, culture, and nightlife and help you find your perfect match.

Red Sea

Location

Marsa Alam and Hurghada are located on the Red Sea's western shore, about 270 km apart. Marsa Alam is closer to the south, near the border with Sudan, while Hurghada is closer to the north, near the entrance of the Gulf of Suez.

Marsa Alam is a newer, quieter resort surrounded by desert and mountains. It has a small town center with a few shops and restaurants, but most hotels are spread along the coast, away from the hustle and bustle. Marsa Alam is also closer to some of the historical and cultural attractions of Upper Egypt, such as Luxor and Aswan, which can be reached by road or by air.

Hurghada is an older and busier resort with a large and lively city center that offers a variety of shops, restaurants, bars, and clubs. Its long, vast promenade stretches along the coast, connecting different areas and beaches. Hurghada is also closer to some of the natural and adventurous attractions of the Sinai Peninsula, such as Mount Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, and the Colored Canyon, which can be reached by road or ferry.

Climate

Marsa Alam and Hurghada enjoy a hot and dry climate, with plenty of sunshine and little rainfall throughout the year. However, there are some slight differences in temperature and wind.

Marsa Alam tends to be slightly warmer than Hurghada, especially in the winter, when the average temperature is around 22°C, compared to 18°C in Hurghada. Marsa Alam also tends to be less windy than Hurghada, which can make the sea calmer, more transparent, more humid, and less refreshing.

Hurghada tends to be slightly cooler than Marsa Alam, especially in the summer, when the average temperature is around 33°C, compared to 36°C in Marsa Alam. Hurghada also tends to be more windy than Marsa Alam, which can make the sea choppier and murkier but also more breezy and pleasant.

Beaches

Marsa Alam and Hurghada boast beautiful beaches with soft sand and clear water. However, there are some differences in the quality and accessibility of the beaches.

Marsa Alam has some of the best beaches in the Red Sea, with pristine and unspoiled sand and water. Some beaches are protected as natural reserves, such as the Sharm El Luli beach, which is often ranked as one of the best beaches in the world. Marsa Alam also has some of the best coral reefs and marine life in the Red Sea, with dolphins, turtles, dugongs, and sharks. However, some of the beaches are only accessible by boat or by hotel guests, and some of them require walking over rocks or coral to enter the water.

Hurghada has some of the most accessible and convenient beaches in the Red Sea, with many public and private beaches that offer facilities and services. Some beaches are artificial, with imported sand and water, such as the Mahmya beach, an artificial island. Hurghada also has some of the most diverse and colorful coral reefs and fish in the Red Sea, with over 200 and over 1,000 species of coral. However, some beaches are crowded and noisy, and some suffer from pollution and erosion.

Activities

Both Marsa Alam and Hurghada offer a wide range of activities for all ages and interests. However, there are some differences in the type and availability of the activities.

Marsa Alam is a paradise for diving and snorkeling, with some of the best sites and conditions in the Red Sea. Some of the most famous sites include Elphinstone Reef, Dolphin House, and Abu Dabab. Marsa Alam also offers other water sports, such as kite surfing, sailing, kayaking, and desert activities, like quad biking, jeep safari, and camel riding.

Marsa Alam has a more authentic and traditional culture with a strong sense of local identity and heritage. It has a small, friendly, relaxed, laid-back community. Marsa Alam also has a closer connection to the ancient and historical sites of Upper Egypt, such as the temples of Karnak and Luxor, the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, and the monuments of Abu Simbel.
