At a workshop in Hurghada, Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, is told that Egypt’s initiative for coral reefs in the Red Sea is part of the ministry’s efforts to create a supportive climate and change the way of a dialogue on preserving natural resources. She said that natural reserves focus on coral reefs as critical assets.
The workshop, which was held in cooperation with USAID, UNDP, and the World Coral Reef Fund, aimed to discuss the preparation and design phase of the program, develop a shared understanding of the project’s goals with the stakeholders, and secure their support, discuss and confirm the geographical scope of the program, and study the environmental and socio-economic status and the factors and causes of coral reef degradation, opportunities, and challenges.
The participants also discussed the importance of green investments, such as microgrants and blended finance, which support small solar power systems, extensive wastewater treatment facilities, and renewable energy resources.
The minister said that Egypt has been working on sustainable natural resource management for years, exploring how to protect natural reserves and engage local communities as part of the protection and conservation of resources.
She also emphasized the importance of the workshop in reaching concrete measures to advance the initiative.
She also announced the start of work on the green Hurghada project in cooperation with the Global Environment Facility. She evaluated current policies and regulatory procedures to repeat our success story of turning Sharm El-Sheikh into a green city.
